IELTS Listening Test

Test-takers will be allotted approximately 30 minutes to complete the Listening test and an additional 10 minutes to transfer their answers.


Academic and General Training candidates will undertake the same Listening test, comprising four distinct sections.


Each section consists of ten questions, for a total of 40 questions. The difficulty level progressively increases throughout the test.


Sections 1 and 2 are set in a social context, while sections 3 and 4 are in an academic environment.


The Listening test is structured as follows:


Section

  1. A dialogue between two individuals on a general subject, such as obtaining travel information.

  2. A monologue delivered by a single speaker on a general topic, like providing details about a park or location.

  3. A discussion involving two or three individuals in an academic setting, for instance, an educational presentation.

  4. A monologue within an academic context, such as a lecture delivered by a professor.


Various question types may be presented, ranging from most common to least common:

  1. Completion tasks involving notes, summaries, tables, flow charts, etc.

    1. Fill in the blanks within the specified word limit.

    2. Primarily featured in section 1.

    3. Categories may include Name, Address, Price, Location, etc.

  2. Multiple Choice questions where candidates select 1 or 2 answers.

  3. Short answer questions to be responded to within the given word limit.

  4. Sentence Completion tasks where the provided sentence needs to be completed within the word limit.

  5. Labelling diagrams, plans, or maps within the specified word limit, sometimes involving choosing from a provided set of answers.

  6. Classification tasks require matching letters to numbers and aligning questions with provided answers.

  7. Matching exercises, akin to classification, may involve associating names, dates, theories, or types with corresponding answers.
